"Out Honor the UPS Driver!"
(Honor those who make deliveries to you!)
by Carwin Dover, Relationship Coach

A small group of baggage handlers were recently video tapped playing basketball with the luggage as it came off a plane. It made the national news and probably answered some questions about the condition of your luggage.

Why were they being so disrespectful of the valuable cargo coming off the plane? Hmmmmm. Maybe a better question is what can I do to encourage delivery people to WANT to respect the valuables they transfer?

Inciteful Insight!* It seems wise to respect the person(s) who deliver your wares.
* inciteful is intentionally spelled to mean an insight that urges or stirs up thought!

You probably don't have access to the luggage handlers who work for the airlines you use. (If you do, please pass on a word of encouragement to them!) However, you probably have the opportunity to have personal contact with at least one person nearly every day whose career is delivering goods to you. It may be the UPS driver, the mailman, the Pepsi deliverer, or any number of possibilities.

So, how does one go about "Out Honoring" someone like the UPS driver? One time I was chastised by a friend who was a mail carrier. I proudly to told him that I thought I had gone out of my way to compliment another carrieron a particularly cold, Montana winter day. "You're earning your money today," I said with a big grin.

My friend reminded me that the carrier earned his money every day! There's your first "how not to Out Honor the UPS driver." The following are a few ideas to start your thinking. Please send your thoughts and suggestions. I'd love to write "101 Ways to Out Honor the UPS Driver." For now, however, here are the

TOP TEN WAYS TO "OUT HONOR" THE UPS DRIVER!

*** Say, "Thank You!"
Sometimes it's the basics that mean the most. To add a little "Out Honoring", all you have to do is include eye contact and enthusiasm in your voice. Your sincerity may be the highlight of the day!

*** Ask, "How Are You Really Doing Today?"
When you notice your delivery person looks a bit frustrated, dare to ask the above question. Be sincere and go along with what's said. A listening ear for even a few seconds can be a real gift.

*** Offer a Snack!
An "apple a day" may keep the doctor away, but it could just keep the deliveries coming. Sure, it is their job to deliver your stuff, but why not make it their desire to see you and make your deliveries extra special?

*** Send a "Thank You!" Note to the Supervisor!
Do you ever wonder how many notes of condemnation vs. notes of commendation supervisors receive? You can assume a complimentary note from you will receive First Class attention!

*** Write an Editorial for the Newspaper!
People who read editorials are used to numerous letters lamenting poor service. If you help improve the service your "UPS driver" gives by doing some "Out Honoring", please let the public know they do have some control!

*** Call the Driver by Name!
Dale Carnegie noted that your name is one of the most precious things you like to hear. Take the chance that the same is true of people who make deliveries to you.

*** Open a Door for Your Driver!
Think about this -- How many doors does a UPS driver open in a day? One less door might seem like no big deal, but give it a try. It's easy to do!

*** Give a Compliment in Front of Other People!
Watch for the countless opportunities you have to brag about your "UPS driver" in front of other people. It might be on the street, or at coffee across the way. If you see your driver, let someone know you think your "UPS driver" is the best!

*** Start a "Delivery of the Month" Award!
What kind of impression would it make on your customers if you used valuable wall space for pictures of all the people who deliver to your place of work? What kind of impression would it make on the delivery people when one was featured each month? Remember -- they do impact your customer service.

*** Shake Hands!
At the beginning, I suggested that saying, "Thank You!" with eye contact and a sincere voice was powerful. When you know of no other way to really "Out Honor" your UPS driver, shake hands. You will be remembered the rest of the day!
